About the Artist
Sarah Brenneman (b. 1975, Middletown, OH) is an American painter based in West Orange, New Jersey. Her practice centers on abstraction as a universal visual language, with works ranging from large-scale canvases in acrylic to more intimately scaled pieces on paper using gouache, watercolor, and pencil. Across formats, Brenneman explores the emotive and communicative potential of color, gesture, and form.
Rooted in the rich lineage of American abstraction, her work draws inspiration from mid-20th-century artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Willem de Kooning, as well as early American modernists like Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley.
Brenneman holds a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the Tri-State area and internationally in Busan, South Korea; Reims, France; and St. Petersburg, Russia. Her paintings are included in notable public and corporate collections including the Aspen Contemporary Art Collection, the Cleveland Clinic, the Sprint Collection, and The Progressive Corporation.
