A native of Medford, Massachusetts, Christopher Adams developed a passion for ceramics and nature in his youth. Adams experienced his first forays into ceramics while in high school; he went on to study Biology at Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1994 with a Bachelor’s degree in organismic and evolutionary biology. After Harvard, Adams spent a year in Madagascar observing the development of a national park system and collecting insects. He then returned to Harvard working as curatorial assistant and illustrator at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and then worked at an architectural firm specializing in the design of zoos and aquariums. His passion for art, biology and zoology still intact, he became increasingly interested in pathology and decided to go to medical school. In 2004 he graduated from Columbia University of Physicians and Surgeons with a degree in dermatology. Adams currently balances his professional practice as dermatologist with his prolific artistic life. Both are very visual and tactile professions, which feed off each other in a uniquely complementary way. Influenced by his biology background, Adams illustrates the concept of adaptive radiation (when an organism enters an unpopulated environment and differentiates rapidly) in with his surreal series of animal and plant-like forms.
“His porcelain can be precious and delicate, and his glazes dramatically complex, but it is the imagery itself that is so compelling.” - Joseph Jacobs, Art + Antiques
“Creepily beautiful, Christopher Adams fashions wonderfully delicate, spiky objects that look like specimens of underwater flora and fauna from another planet.”
- Ken Johnson, New York Times
